On 27 August 2026, Assistant Professor Dr. Udomlak Sompong, Associate Dean for Research and Academic Services, together with Ms. Nattakarn Mukdachatupak, Acting Head of Academic Services, representing the Academic Service Committee of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology, Maejo University, welcomed officials from the Office of Agricultural Economics Research, Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE). The delegation visited the Faculty to discuss approaches for studying, analyzing, and conducting research on the economics of production and marketing of agricultural commodities, particularly giant freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), in Chiang Mai Province. The meeting was held at the CEFAR Meeting Room, Faculty of Fisheries Technology, Maejo University.

The discussion aimed to exchange information on production conditions, production costs, farming-related factors, marketing issues, and the production potential of giant freshwater prawn farmers in Chiang Mai Province. The information gathered will contribute to the development of research topics and studies that are aligned with local contexts and can be effectively utilized to formulate practical agricultural development and extension strategies.

On this occasion, Associate Professor Dr. Jongkol Promya, a lecturer and researcher specializing in the development of feed formulations for giant freshwater prawns through the application of Spirulina algae and Wolffia (watermeal) eggs to promote prawn growth, shared research findings and expertise on feed development, culture system management, and academic issues related to improving production efficiency. These aspects are crucial in reducing production costs and enhancing farmers’ competitiveness.

In addition, the Faculty’s Academic Service Committee provided information regarding the establishment and development of the Faculty’s Giant Freshwater Prawn Production Learning Center, which was initiated in 2023 under the leadership of Assistant Professor Dr. Chatree Wirasit. The center was established as a learning hub for knowledge transfer in giant freshwater prawn production and as a platform for experimentation, research, and development of practical knowledge that can be applied by farmers and other interested stakeholders.

Currently, the learning center is undergoing revitalization and further development of its production systems under the direction of Associate Professor Dr. Apinan Suwanrak, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology. The Dean places strong emphasis on enhancing the center’s capacity to serve as a learning, research, demonstration, and experimental facility, while also acting as a collaborative platform that connects the university with government agencies, private-sector organizations, researchers, and the agricultural community.

The meeting also explored potential research themes focused on strengthening farmers’ production capacity. Key areas of interest included studying factors affecting farming efficiency, cost management, the development of feed and innovations suited to local conditions, improving prawn productivity and quality, and linking production information with market demands. These efforts aim to develop practical solutions that address farmers’ needs while responding to current agricultural economic conditions.

This exchange of information and collaboration marks another important step in building a strong research and academic service partnership between the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and the Office of Agricultural Economics. The collaboration seeks to leverage academic expertise, research outcomes, and area-based data to support the efficient development of giant freshwater prawn production systems in Chiang Mai Province, ultimately contributing to enhanced knowledge, increased economic opportunities, and strengthened long-term resilience for farmers.
