Associate Professor Dr. Apinun Suvarnaraksha, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Aquatic Resources at Maejo University, served as a keynote speaker for the Mekong River Community Network on May 27, 2026. He delivered a lecture titled “The Heavy Metal Situation in the Lower Mekong River Basin and Environmental Vulnerability to Transboundary Heavy Metals.”

The presentation focused on transferring critical knowledge regarding heavy metal contamination in the Mekong River, highlighting the specific impacts of gold and rare earth mining on aquatic ecosystems, fish, aquatic life, public health, and the local economies of riverside communities.

Key topics covered in the lecture included:

  • Contamination Levels: The current status of heavy metals in water, sediment, and fish within the Mekong River Basin.

  • Toxicity in the Food Chain: The processes of bioaccumulation and biomagnification of toxic substances.

  • Biodiversity Impacts: The direct consequences on fish populations and overall aquatic biodiversity.

  • Public Health Concerns: The health risks posed to local communities, with a particular focus on children and vulnerable groups.

  • Socio-Economic Threats: The long-term impacts on the local economy, food security, and human capital.

  • Advanced Monitoring Technologies: The integration of modern technologies—such as Stable Isotope analysis (δ13C  and δ15N), environmental DNA (eDNA), and Artificial Intelligence (AI)—for environmental monitoring and surveillance.

  • Sustainable Solutions: Frameworks and guidelines for the sustainable management and restoration of the Mekong River.

The event also provided a platform for Dr. Apinun to exchange perspectives with community networks, academics, and local residents. The discussion emphasized building a shared understanding of the importance of aquatic resource conservation, environmental quality monitoring, and the development of community-led surveillance systems to prevent long-term impacts on the ecosystem, health, and quality of life.

This engagement reflects the ongoing commitment of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Aquatic Resources, Maejo University, to leverage academic expertise in supporting society, empowering communities, and fostering sustainable natural resource management. The ultimate goal is to ensure a balanced, safe, and sustainable utilization of the Mekong River for both current and future generations.
