On 27 August 2026  Associate Professor Dr. Apinun Suvarnaraksha, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Aquatic Resources, Maejo University, was invited to participate in the Nature Positive Society panel discussion at the MFLF Sustainability Forum 2026: “Nature Positive: Making Nature the New Normal”, held at Meeting Rooms 210-211, Level 2, Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok.

The forum was organized to create a platform for dialogue among organizational leaders, experts, academics, community representatives, businesses, and financial institutions to explore pathways for making nature an integral part of national decision-making, development, and economic growth. The event highlighted a key message: achieving a Nature Positive future requires simultaneous progress across the business, social, and financial sectors.

The program was structured around three interconnected themes:

  • Nature Positive Business
  • Nature Positive Society
  • Nature Positive Finance

These discussions aimed to connect corporate strategy transformation, community and societal resilience, and financial and investment mechanisms that support ecological restoration while fostering sustainable economic growth.

During the Nature Positive Society session, Dr. Apinun Suvarnaraksha joined:

  • Mr. Banjong Narphornmethee, Community Enterprise Representative from Bo Hin Subdistrict, Sikao District, Trang Province;
  • Mr. Thanit Kongkaew, Director of Sustainability, Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage;

with Dr. Supatchaya Techachucherd, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Specialist of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, serving as moderator.

The discussion emphasized that nature does not function in isolated parts but rather as an interconnected system. Watersheds, forests, agricultural landscapes, freshwater resources, biodiversity, food systems, community livelihoods, and economic activities are all linked. Therefore, building a Nature Positive Society should go beyond merely reducing environmental impacts. It should actively focus on restoring ecosystems, enhancing natural capital, and creating mechanisms that allow both nature and society to thrive together.

Drawing upon his expertise in aquatic resources and biodiversity conservation, Dr. Apinun highlighted freshwater ecosystems as a clear example of the close relationship between nature and human well-being. Changes in upstream areas, land-use practices, agriculture, urban development, and economic activities can directly influence water quality, aquatic biodiversity, food security, local incomes, and the livelihoods of downstream communities.

He emphasized that effective implementation of the Nature Positive agenda at the societal level requires the integration of scientific evidence, local knowledge, community participation, governance mechanisms, and economic incentives. Such integration ensures that nature conservation is not perceived as a burden on communities but rather as a pathway toward improved quality of life, long-term security, and sustainable economic opportunities.

His participation also reflected Maejo University's commitment to applying knowledge in agriculture, fisheries, natural resources, and environmental sciences to support sustainable development. In particular, the university seeks to strengthen the connections between science and communities, as well as between nature and development, enabling ecosystem restoration efforts to generate measurable benefits for biodiversity, economic prosperity, and public well-being.
