30 August 2026 – Associate Professor Dr. Apinun Suvarnaraksha, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Aquatic Resources, Maejo University, participated in an urgent consultation meeting regarding the detection of contaminants in the upper Kok River Basin. The meeting was held at the Tha Ton Subdistrict Administrative Organization Conference Room in Mae Ai District, Chiang Mai Province, at the invitation of the Rompho Foundation, in collaboration with the Chiang Mai Provincial Agriculture Council and the Tha Ton Subdistrict Administrative Organization. The event brought together stakeholders to exchange academic information, assess the situation, and discuss response measures to address potential impacts on local communities and the aquatic ecosystem of the Kok River Basin.

During the meeting, Associate Professor Dr.Apinun Suvarnaraksha presented research findings and scientific information on aquatic ecology, environmental quality, and the impacts of mining activities in neighboring countries that are connected to transboundary river systems. His presentation explained the links between upstream mining activities, changes in water and sediment quality, heavy metal contamination, and the potential consequences for aquatic organisms and ecosystem structure.

A key topic of discussion was the impact of sediment generated by mining activities on aquatic habitats and riverine food webs. Fine sediment deposits can accumulate on riverbeds, reducing light penetration and adversely affecting algae and benthic organisms that form the foundation of aquatic food chains. These changes may subsequently impact aquatic insects, fish larvae, herbivorous fish, and predatory fish. In addition, long-term exposure to heavy metals may affect the growth, reproduction, and overall health of aquatic communities. Dr. Apinan emphasized that environmental assessments should consider the entire ecosystem rather than focusing solely on contaminant concentrations in water.

He also recommended establishing a systematic and continuous monitoring program for the Kok River Basin. Such a program should integrate assessments of water quality, sediments, aquatic organisms, fish populations, and food web dynamics to better understand the transport pathways and accumulation of contaminants. Combining spatial and temporal monitoring data would improve evaluations of ecosystem changes and potential risks to public health.

The meeting further reviewed water, soil, and food crop monitoring results collected by relevant agencies and academic institutions. Reports indicated the presence of certain heavy metals, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), in some samples. Participants discussed the need for additional monitoring, health risk assessments, food safety evaluations, and effective risk communication strategies to ensure that local communities can access and apply reliable information to reduce potential exposure.

Associate Professor Dr. Apinan Suvarnaraksha stated that addressing pollution issues in transboundary river systems requires science-based evidence, long-term monitoring, and collaboration among multiple sectors. He emphasized the importance of viewing rivers as interconnected ecosystems extending from headwaters to downstream areas, noting that impacts on sediments, microorganisms, and aquatic fauna can ultimately affect food security, public health, and local livelihoods.

His participation in the meeting reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Fisheries Technology and Aquatic Resources, Maejo University, to serving as a reliable academic partner for local communities. Through research and expertise in aquatic ecology, fisheries science, and environmental impact assessment, the Faculty continues to support efforts to address transboundary pollution issues using scientific evidence, with the goal of protecting river ecosystems, food safety, public health, and the long-term well-being of communities.
